Relax your eyes using the 20-20-20 rule

Do you spend a lot of time working in front of your laptop or desktop PC. Then you definitely need this rule to prevent your eyes from further damage. 
It is said that 
" Eyes are the windows to the soul"
But what if your eyes get damaged due to work you do sitting close to a screen like your laptop's or desktop's screen.

The rule of 20 minutes, 20 feet and 20 seconds is a well known rule proven scientifically. The rule helps you in preventing your eyes.

On working continuously in front of a computer screen, our eyes often dry up. The dryness in eyes leads towards there redness. 

To solve this problem , you need to look at an object kept at a distance of 20 Feet after every 20 minutes, for a time duration of 20 seconds. Hence, after every 20 minutes you need to take a break from your work and look away from the screen. This helps in reducing the risk of damaging your eyes.

Now you might find it hard to stick to the 20 minute rule, as you cannot look at your watch all the time. To help you with this, you can use a software utility named Eye Defender. This program loads in your system and pops up in fixed intervals of time. After its pop up, it will show you a visual eye training video to relax your eyes. Have a look at type of video it displays for relaxation of the eyes.

Another tool that can be of great help during the breaks is WorkRave. WorkRave provides an option to the user to set the time intervals for the break. It also provides the user with the stretching exercises to perform during the breaks.

  • Some of the other tips you should follow to prevent your eyes are as follows :-
  • Adjust your monitors Screen resolution, text size, brightness and contrast.
  • Use Magnifier utility present in your operating system whenever required. Don't strain your eyes, if you can read it in an easy way. ( To start the magnifier, just go to Start> All Programs>Accessories>Accessibility>Magnifier ).
  • Adjust the lights in the room you are sitting. Avoid using computer/laptop in the dark.
  • Have a doctor check your eyes at regular intervals.
  • Maintain a balance diet, make sure you take a lot of vitamin A rich vegetables like carrot.
